For families of adults
From parent and child to two adults
The relationship between a parent and a grown-up child has to be renegotiated, and most families never do it on purpose. It shows up as intrusive advice on one side and feeling treated like a child on the other. Sameside gives both of you a private way to say what you actually need, and a coach that names the pattern without blaming anyone.
How it works for families
A family circle holds up to six adults. Each person answers the assessment alone — the questions change for families: roles, expectations, independence, no intimacy items. The coach reads everyone, writes a formulation you can each correct, and builds a plan of small practices: advice only on request, direct lines instead of messages through siblings, one unwritten rule renegotiated a month.
The unwritten rules
Every family runs on rules nobody agreed to. The rules worksheet has each person list them privately; the coach shows which are shared and which only some of you hold, and proposes the one to revisit first.
If contact has broken down
Reconnection rarely works by re-litigating the past. The coach follows the estrangement research: listen without defending, acknowledge impact, change something visible, and keep contact small and predictable before big conversations.
The research behind this, in two minutes
From parent and child to two adults
The relationship between parents and grown-up children has to be renegotiated. Advice by invitation is the hinge.
Why the message goes through your sister
When two people are tense, a third gets pulled in. Families run on triangles. Taking it direct dissolves them.
Coming back after distance
Reconciliation rarely works by re-litigating the past. It works when the person seeking repair listens, acknowledges impact, and changes something visible.
Questions people ask
Can family counselling work with adult children?
Yes, and it works best when hierarchy is renegotiated explicitly: advice by invitation, decisions respected, strings on help named. Sameside is built for exactly that renegotiation.
Does everyone have to take part?
No. Anyone who joins gets a personal plan from their own answers. The shared plan needs everyone in the circle to finish.
