Atone, attune, attach: the order matters
After a breach of trust, rushing to closeness backfires. Full honesty first, then rebuilding the emotional connection, then new intimacy.
The Gottmans describe three phases after betrayal. Atone: the person who broke trust answers questions without defensiveness, shows remorse, and stops all secrecy. Attune: the couple rebuilds emotional connection, learning the pattern that left them vulnerable. Attach: new intimacy, on new terms.
The hurt person sets the pace. Reassurance that comes before atonement feels like pressure to move on.
Trust is rebuilt in small promises kept daily, not in speeches.
If the breach is ongoing or undisclosed, shared work is not yet safe; individual support comes first.
The person rebuilding trust: make one small promise today and keep it, without pointing it out.
